Position Overview

Q Engineering is seeking an experienced Shop Drawing Technician – Steel Structures to prepare accurate shop drawings, 3D models, fabrication drawings, and connection details for structural steel, heavy-gauge steel, and light-gauge steel projects.

This remote role requires close coordination with Q Engineering’s engineers, project coordinators, fabricators, and clients to deliver high-quality, fabrication-ready drawing packages.

The ideal candidate has strong experience in structural steel detailing, advanced Tekla Structures knowledge, strong AutoCAD skills, and a solid understanding of fabrication, erection, constructability, and Canadian standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed shop drawings and fabrication drawings for structural steel, heavy-gauge steel, and light-gauge steel systems.
  • Develop and maintain accurate 3D models using Tekla Structures.
  • Prepare general arrangement drawings, assembly drawings, erection drawings, and material lists / BOQ.
  • Prepare connection details in accordance with the engineer’s design and applicable standards.
  • Coordinate shop drawings with structural design drawings and resolve clashes.
  • Review RFIs, markups, revisions, and fabrication comments.
  • Maintain drawing revisions, naming conventions, and document control.
  • Coordinate with engineers, project coordinators, fabricators, and clients.
  • Ensure all drawings comply with project specifications, CSA standards, and company quality requirements.
  • Meet agreed project schedules and productivity targets.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Diploma or Degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architectural Technology, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of structural steel shop drawing experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with Tekla Structures is mandatory.
  • Advanced AutoCAD skills are mandatory.
  • Strong experience with heavy-gauge steel and light-gauge steel detailing.
  • Strong understanding of steel fabrication, erection, and constructability.
  • Knowledge of CSA standards, Ontario Building Code, and CISC detailing practices.
  • Experience with connection detailing and fabrication documentation.
  • Experience with BIM coordination.
  • Revit and Navisworks experience are considered assets.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work independently in a remote environment.

Working Conditions

  • Hours of Work: 40+ hours per week or as agreed in the engagement agreement.
  • Work Environment: Fully remote position using Microsoft Teams and cloud-based collaboration tools.
  • Special Requirements: Reliable high-speed internet, a professional home office setup, ability to maintain confidentiality, and availability during agreed working hours.

The Shop Drawing Technician is expected to prepare accurate, coordinated, and fabrication-ready shop drawings that comply with project specifications, applicable Canadian standards, and Q Engineering quality requirements.

Individuals engaged in this role are expected to maintain confidentiality, communicate effectively, follow company document control standards, and deliver high-quality work within agreed schedules.

Performance will be evaluated based on drawing quality, model accuracy, coordination, productivity, revision control, communication, and meeting project deadlines.
